Steadman Hawkins Clinic, established in Vail, Colorado,
is one of the premier orthopaedics and sports medicine clinics in the United States with a long history of caring for elite athletes and sports teams from throughout the world. Looking to establish an East Coast presence in 2004, Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas selected Spartanburg, S.C., in a partnership with Mary Black Health System.
Philosophy of Care
Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas (SHCC) physicians believe that clinical care, physical rehabilitation and performance enhancement are integral parts of successful recovery. The care plan must be individualized for optimal recovery to be achieved as quickly as possible. Whether it is a senior with a hip injury wanting to be pain-free or a competitive athlete wanting to return to pre-injury form, SHCC has the expertise and the resources to help make that happen.
Through the use of advanced technology and strong relationships with past fellows, each Steadman Hawkins physician has the ability to consult with other experts. No matter the condition, a proper diagnosis is made and treatment plan determined. Images can be sent anywhere in the world for a physician to review and provide an opinion as to diagnosis and treatment.
Because SHCC provides care for many athletes, performance enhancement is an integral component of care. The performance experts at each SHCC can help athletes from weekend warriors to professionals improve their performance from the end of physical therapy to the return to competitive sports. The non-injured athlete can help improve responsiveness and agility to perform better on the field.

SHCC has state-of-the-art imaging technology at each location (or conveniently nearby). This allows our physicians to assess rapidly a patient’s condition, make a diagnosis, and to develop a treatment and recovery plan during the visit.

Research
The clinic is actively involved in research and development to improve patient care. To help spur innovation, it established the Orthopaedic Research Foundation of the Carolinas (ORFC). Along with the Steadman Hawkins Research Foundation in Vail, Colo., the ORF is among the world’s largest independent orthopaedic research institutes studying the causes, prevention and treatment of orthopaedic disorders.
The foundation (Steadman Hawkins physicians and researchers) has profoundly influenced the practice of orthopaedics from diagnosis to rehabilitation. Recognizing that the body’s innate healing power can be harnessed to improve the healing process has led to exciting advances in surgical techniques that are used today by orthopaedists everywhere. The micro fracture technique, for example, is now accepted as a treatment that may make it possible to postpone or even eliminate the need for knee replacement surgery.
Education
Through the Steadman Hawkins Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship, orthopaedic residents unprecedented exposure to the sports medicine component and to leading-edge techniques that help elite athletes to recover and resume their careers at a competitive level. In addition, the clinic has a fellowship program that attracts surgeons from around the globe to study and perfect the latest advances in orthopaedic surgeries from the experts who, in many instances have helped to develop or refine them. SHCC physicians are developing an orthopaedic primary care residency to meet the expanded needs of an aging population.
Consultation
Referrals are accepted, but not required, to see a physician. Please call any SHCC location to refer a patient; the physicians and staff will determine the most appropriate physician for your patient and will see the patient as quickly as possible. If you are a doctor wishing to consult with a clinic physician, please let the receptionist know and one of our specialists will return your call as soon as possible.
Please note that appointments are thorough. Patients can consult with physicians and physical therapists, get any imaging required and see performance enhancement specialists (where appropriate) during their visit. Our goal is to arrive at a definitive diagnosis and to develop a treatment and recovery plan before the patient leaves the office. We then report this information to the referring physicians to help them monitor their patients.
