Percutaneous Discectomy: An Option for Low Back and Leg Pain
|
Now there’s an option for patients suffering from low back and leg pain due to contained disc herniations. The procedure is especially for those who have failed conservative treatments and are interested in trying minimally invasive options before considering traditional back surgery.
Percutaneous discectomy is performed under X-ray using local anesthetic, sometimes with light sedation. It’s much less invasive than surgical treatments, and should take 15 minutes to one hour.
The procedure involves removing disc tissue, which may relieve painful pressure on the surrounding nerves. There should be no pain during the procedure, requiring only a tiny puncture in the skin similar to a simple injection.
In some cases, pain may be eliminated. In most cases, percutaneous discetomy followed by appropriate follow-up care reduces pain to a tolerable level.
Once it is determined a patient is a candidate for the percutaneous discectomy procedure offered by The Vascular Center, please call (864) 596-7428 to schedule an appointment.
