Building on a History of Service To the Community
On January 18, 1925, Mary Black Memorial Hospital opened its doors on the corner of Oakland Avenue and East Main Street. Dr. Hugh R. Black named the 35-bed facility in honor of his wife, Mary Snoddy Black. Six patients were admitted that day.
From that small beginning grew a proud heritage of service and compassion. We’ve built a solid tradition of customer service and healing over the last 80 years—that’s the Mary Black way. A way of doing things that I’m very proud to be associated with.
But increasingly, Mary Black Memorial Hospital has gained a reputation for more than its individualized care. Today we’re equally noted for delivering the most up-to-date treatment available. |
Here are just a few of the many exciting things that are happening on our campus:
• More than $90 million in expansions and renovations, including completely renovated, all private patient rooms, a new orthopedic wing, three new operating rooms and a new Endoscopy suite.
• The Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas, bringing the finest orthopedic care to the Upstate. Led by world-renown surgeons, this new state-of-the-art orthopedic center offers not only unparalleled surgical services but also physical therapy, sports performance, education and research. It’s the only healthcare facility of its kind on the east coast.
• One of the first hospitals in the Upstate with the VCT LightSpeed scanner, which is able to perform a whole body scan in less than 10 seconds. This cutting-edge medical equipment is able to provide 64 images (“slice”) that enable physicians to diagnose and treat patients more effectively.
• A fully renovated Birthing Center, providing comfort and special care for our new moms and our tiniest patients!
• Remodeled Outpatient Surgery and waiting rooms, conveniently located on the first floor of the hospital with its own entrance.
• The Vascular Center, providing the latest non-invasive techniques for diagnosis and treatment of arterial and venous (vein) disease.
The Mary Black Physician Group is comprised of more than 90 highly skilled physicians in practices throughout Spartanburg, Cherokee and Union counties. In the past several years, we’ve added physicians and staff for services including oncology, gastroenterology, infectious disease, vascular, perinatology and interventional radiology, plus 24-hour hospitalist coverage. Our medical staff of approximately 350 physicians represents all major specialties.
Mary Black Memorial Hospital is a 209-bed hospital with a consistent reputation for quality care. Accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations, Mary Black serves more than 8,000 inpatients and more than 100,000 outpatients each year.
On behalf of all of our physicians and staff, welcome to the Mary Black Health System.
Sincerely,
Phillip L. Wright CEO Mary Black Health System
